The Science Behind How Reiki Works

It has been known for some time that electric currents flow through the body.  These currents flow through the nervous system and are one of the ways the body regulates itself.  The nervous system is connected to every organ and tissue in the body and signals flow through it from the brain to regulate all bodily activities. Electric currents also flow from the heart through the circulatory system made possible by the saline solution of the blood, providing an additional pathway for electric currents to flow.  Over 50,000 miles of blood vessels allow the ‘heart ectricity’ to flow to every part of the body. Electric currents flow in and between all the cells of the body.  Many of the body’s cells contain liquid crystals.  The crystals are in cell membranes, in the Myelin sheaths of nerves, and in many other locations.  All crystals produce Piezo electric effects when pressure is placed on them.  The liquid crystals in the body are therefore continuously generating electric currents.  The currents are often coherent, meaning that like a laser the frequencies are all in step within a given area.  The laser like vibrations can travel within the body and also radiate into the environment.

The hands also have biomagnetic fields surrounding them.  The biomagnetic fields of healers hands have been measured while healing and have been found to be much stronger than those of non healers.  A simple magnetometer was used consisting of two coils of 80,000 turns each and was hooked to an amplifier.  Healers hands had a field strength of 0.002 Gauss, which is 1000 times stronger than any other field emitted from the body.  The field pulses at a variable frequency between 0.3 and 30 Hz, with most of the energy in the 7 to 8 Hz range.

The healing energy in the hands is at least partially generated by the perineural system.  The system surrounds the nerves and is a pathway for direct electric currents.  The currents are modulated by brain waves which in turn are controlled by the Thalamus.

When a person is sick, one or more of the organs of the sick person’s body will have biomagnetic frequencies not in the healthy range for those organs.  An assembly of cells, as in a tissue or organ, will have certain collective frequencies that regulate important processes, such as cell division.  Normally these frequencies will be very stable. If, for some reason, a cell shifts its frequency, entraining signals from neighbouring cells will tend to reinstall the correct frequency.  However, if a sufficient number of cells get out of step, the strength of the systems collective vibrations can decrease to the point where stability is lost.  Loss of coherence can lead to dis-ease or disorder.  This concurs with the metaphysical concept that illness starts first in the aura or biomagnetic field before developing in the physical body.

The process can also work in the opposite direction when a healer is scanning or attempting to find areas of distress in a recipients biomagnetic field.  During this process, the healer slowly moves one or both hands a few inches above the body, paying attention to sensations in the alm of their hand 'Byosen'.  The ‘recipients’ field induces changes in the field of the healers hands that the healer can feel.  The healer is then able to locate areas of distress in the recipients biomagnetic field.

When a healer places his/her hands near a sick organ and begins to heal, the biomagnetic field emitted from the healers hands becomes much stronger than that emitted by the sick organ.  The frequency of the biomagnetic field of the healers hands also begins pulsing at the healthy frequencies needed by the organ.  Because the healers biomagnetic field is much stronger than the sick organ it induces the healthy frequencies into the field of the sick organ, causing it to adjust it’s frequencies back into the healthy range.  The adjustment in turn affects the electrical current flowing in the cells and nervous system within and around the organ, as well as its biological processes, and healing takes place.

Reiki is growing in popularity thanks to new research and user testimonials

There have been a number of research studies regarding the effectiveness of Reiki and many positive testimonials worldwide, by users who swear by it for problems such as stress, anxiety, pain and depression.

“New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Campus conducted one of the first studies ever performed to determine the effectiveness of Reiki treatments on the autonomic nervous system. This “blind, random study” included a Reiki treatment group, a “sham” treatment group and a “control” group. The testing began with all participants at “baseline” autonomic nervous systems levels. The results within the Reiki treatment group showed a lowering of these levels including heart rate, respiration and blood pressure. These positive results led the team to recommend further, larger studies to look at the biological effects of Reiki treatment.”
